SFU Shrum Chemistry Building

We represented SFU’s interests for both the design and construction components of this renovation to the existing chemistry facility. This project had numerous challenges as many unusual site conditions were uncovered that required funding from the contingency. In addition, due to Federal funding requirements, extensive, critical and ongoing financial reporting was required.

We developed a strong working relationship with the Chemistry Department early in the project, which proved to be an important part of the resolution of the many issues that arose and required both input and compromises to address.

The restraint of seismically upgrading the existing structure (which was over 40 years old) and the aggressive schedule (complete the design and construction works in only 16 months) added to the challenge of this Knowledge Infrastructure Program project. Both the electrical and communication systems required extensive involvement from SFU’s Facilities Management group as the existing building was a hub for feeds to most of the surrounding buildings. Bringing the systems up to current standards as well as ensuring that no interruptions were experienced by the rest of the campus were of paramount importance.

Project Details:

Client: Simon Fraser University

Timeline: December 2009 – July 2011

Project Budget: $50,000,000

Highlight:  We met the aggressive schedule set by the Federal funding requirements despite extremely challenging site conditions due to requirements to utilize the existing structure. Three years after the project was completed, an unexpected audit was effortlessly addressed as the project files were exceptionally organized and complete.
