SFU Lorne Davies Complex

One of numerous projects SPL has managed for SFU this state of the art gynmasium facility showcases SFU’s many successful varsity teams as well as providing fitness facilities (1,000 m2) for the general student population. This expansion of the existing athletic facilities presented the challenge of building in a very confined area, in addition to integrating various systems with the existing facility.

The open area required for the 2,000 seat stadium was addressed with a glulam roof structure that required significant coordination during the erection phase to insure the continued operation and safety of the other existing facilities in close approximation.

The exterior south face of the building is a glazing system to allow the facility to be lit by natural light. This presented a heating and cooling challenge for the mechanical system, which added considerable structural challenges due to the many large ducts required to address the buildings needs.
